Navigating Chaos

One of the stunningly beautiful things about about all cellular organisms is their ability to maintain a stable environment. This happens completely without conscious thought in almost all cases. Even in humans, the vast majority of regulation is happening automatically. When you get too warm you may seek out the shade, but your body is already cranking up your sweat glands to help dissipate heat. When you are cold you might seek a heat source or put on more layers, but your body will start to shiver without your input. This is known as homeostasis, and these mechanisms expend precious energy to keep your biological systems functioning optimally.

Contrast this with a similar statistical phenomenon: Regression toward the mean. This concept demonstrates that an extreme sampling of a random variable is more likely to be followed by another sampling closer to the mean. That is, assuming some sort of consistent distribution, you are not likely to stay at the extremes of the distribution across several samples. For example, how likely is it that an athlete has the best performance of their career every game? Although theoretically possible, it isn’t very likely. This is partly why we operate competitions across seasons with many games that demonstrate consistent performance that establish a trend.

These two ideas show up all over the place, and I find them on my mind often as guidance for myself and for my team. 2026 is a banner year for chaos across a great many measures, and most people I know are experiencing high levels of uncertainty, stress, and in some cases intense personal challenge. This is certainly true for myself. With so much going on and so much seemingly changing at once, how do you know where to spend your energy? What is worth worrying about and acting on? What is simply noise?

One benefit of being a little older and wiser is perspective. Your lived experience helps inform what ultimately is just natural variance in daily life (and will resolve without energy simply due to Mean Regression) and what is meaningful entropy you will need to actively curtail a la Homeostasis.

In a business sense, your operating processes should take these factors into account. For example, in software development you must actively pay down Technical Debt before your code base becomes fragile and unwieldy (a fact likely lost on today’s vibe coders). On the other hand, a DNS outage may take down your system with little you can do but wait for others to resolve it if you don’t already have your mitigations in place prior to the event.

In a personal sense, you can incorporate these concepts into your own personal philosophy and operating framework. As we know, everything is change. Literally nothing things last forever. This should inspire confidence that, as the saying goes, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.” The trick is being able to identify what is statistical noise and what is an actual threat to your stability and thus will require your precious time and energy to course correct.

I submit for your consideration that far less fits into the latter group than most would think. Over a lifetime there will be important inflection points, but not hundreds or thousands. Perhaps not even dozens. This implies that more frequent sampling (take that however you will) smooths out your trend lines and makes it easier to differentiate extreme measures from actual threats to your equilibrium.

All of this is to say, focus your energy on what matters to you and those you care about. The rest will resolve on its own even if it is uncomfortable in the short to medium term.
